How to Brew Tea

The Three Pillars of the Perfect Brew: Tea, Temperature, Time.

Brewing tea is both an art and a ritual—rooted in intention, patience, and sensory exploration. While there’s no single “right” way to brew, understanding the balance between amount of tea, water temperature, and steeping time helps unlock each tea’s fullest expression.

1. Tea

Start with 1–2 tablespoons of loose leaf tea per 8 oz cup.
We recommend using more tea and shorter steeping times to capture vibrant flavor while avoiding bitterness. A more concentrated steep allows for multiple infusions and a more dynamic tasting experience.

2. Temperature

The quality of your water matters as much as the leaves. Use fresh, clean-tasting water—filtered, spring, or, if you're lucky, mountain stream fresh.
Most of our teas are robust enough for boiling water, but some delicate greens and whites shine with slightly cooler temperatures. Always check individual brewing notes for your specific tea. For example, Green Ecstasy is best brewed with a blend of hot and cool water to preserve its vibrant character.

General Guidelines:

  • Black / Pu-erh / Herbal - 200–212°F
  • Oolong – 190–200°F
  • Green / White – 160–180°F

3. Time

Steep your first infusion for 15–30 seconds.
This quick steep reveals the opening notes—often the boldest or brightest. With each re-steep, flavors evolve and soften, offering a layered tasting journey.

Re-Steep and Repeat

One of the most beautiful aspects of whole leaf tea is how many times you can enjoy it.

Re-steep the same leaves 5–15 times, increasing the steep time slightly with each infusion. You’ll discover surprising depth and complexity as the flavor profile shifts over time. This is where tea becomes a meditation.

Expert Techniques
For Oolong & Pu-erh Teas

  • Rinse briefly with boiling water before your first steep. This helps open the leaves and releases their full aroma.
  • These traditional brewing vessels give you full control and elevate the experience. Pour quickly, taste often.
  • No two teas—and no two tea sessions—are exactly alike. Trust your senses and adapt.

There is no one-size-fits-all recipe. Only the joy of discovery.

Slow down. Sip mindfully. And let each cup reveal something new.
